What is Reading Resource?
The reading resource program at Millburn is a very strategic and individualized approach. It engages the children in meaningful literacy activities, while developing your child's self awareness as a reader. The goals are to increase fluency and learn how to use several comprehension strategies. Several programs may be used to strengthen fluency and comprehension, including My Sidewalks, Leveled Literacy Instruction, Read Live, Reading Plus, and Lexia Core 5. Read Live, Lexia Core 5 and Reading Plus are computer-based programs that focus on phonics, decoding, fluency and comprehension. My Sidewalks is a teacher directed small-group, intensive reading programs that accelerates readers' acquisition of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. It focuses on four basic comprehension skills and strategies that include main idea/supporting details, sequencing, compare/contrast, and drawing conclusions. This program is also aligned with the Scott Foresman Reading Street instruction, vocabulary, and concepts that are taught in the classroom. The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System (LLI) is a small-group literacy intervention with systemically designed lessons and original, engaging leveled books. LLI supports learning in both reading and writing, and helps students expand their knowledge of language and words and how they work. The goal of LLI is to bring students to grade level achievement in reading.Please keep in mind that reading resource is a support program. It is NOT special education, nor will it take the place of your child's reading instruction with his/her classroom teacher. Grades will not be given in this program. However, your child's progress will be closely monitored through weekly assessments.
